What the Hell is Spines & Stars?

First, you can call me Kay.

When I first started planning this site, it was just going to be a faceless blog where I could write about whatever the hell I wanted. Mostly books, obviously, but also whatever else happened to be occupying my brain that day. Book reviews, random thoughts, things happening in my life, and probably a healthy amount of chaos.

But the more I thought about what I wanted this place to be, the more I realized I didn’t want it to just be somewhere for me to talk at people.

I wanted somewhere readers could actually talk to each other, too.

So the idea got a little bigger.

Spines & Stars is still going to have my reviews, recommendations, questionable opinions, and occasional life updates, but now I’m building a community around it too. A place where readers can make their own profiles, find people who like the same weirdly specific books they do, talk in forums, share what they’re currently reading, obsess over upcoming releases, discuss adaptations, trade theories, and generally lose their minds over fictional people together.

And I already have more ideas for where I want to take it. As Spines & Stars grows, I want the site to grow with it. I’m not going to pretend I have every single detail figured out yet because I absolutely do not.

That’s part of the fun.

Why a book site?

In a world full of video reviews, I sat back one day and thought, Why doesn’t anyone just blog about book reviews anymore?

Sure, you can visit Goodreads and similar sites, but I could never seem to find dedicated reviews for the kinds of books I actually enjoy. And if I’m being honest, I sometimes feel like once book bloggers become big creators, whether through video or writing, their opinions can start leaning toward what their audience wants to hear because they’re afraid of offending someone.

I am here to tell you that I am not.

I like what I like. That’s the end of it.

Sometimes I’ll love a book everyone else hates. Sometimes I’ll wonder how the hell a book has a 4.5-star rating. Sometimes I’ll recommend the audiobook over the physical book because I am truly a slut for a really good narrator.

That’s reading.

Spines & Stars is meant to be a place where we can have those conversations without everyone needing to agree.

I read for enjoyment. At the end of the day, books are one of the ways I escape the reality we currently live in. Some of the books I love might not be your cup of tea, and that’s completely fine.

You might dislike a book because of the author, a particular trope, the writing, the characters, or simply because it wasn’t for you. You may even think I’m crazy for loving books that are objectively mediocre.

Fair.

I’m here for a good time, not a long time, and I need to make a dent in my never-ending TBR before I die.

Read what ever the hell you want.

My reading tastes can go from horror fiction to fantasy to filthy dark smut without warning, but I’m always open to discovering something outside my usual genres.

I have my limits, though. We all do.

There are authors, tropes, and books that simply aren’t for me, and nobody should have to justify their reading preferences.

That’s a huge part of what I want Spines & Stars to be about.

You don’t need to have the “right” opinion about a book here. You don’t need to love something because everyone else does, and you don’t need to hate something because the internet decided you’re supposed to.

Read your books. Have your opinions. Tell us why.

Just don’t be an asshole about it.

You’ll find my reviews here, but Spines & Stars is becoming much more than my personal book blog.

You can build your own reader profile, share what you’re currently reading, keep track of your shelves, find readers with similar tastes, join forum discussions, talk about upcoming releases, obsess over adaptations, share theories, and generally lose your mind over fictional people with strangers on the internet who understand exactly why you’re upset.

And yes, there will probably still be days when I randomly tell you about what’s happening in my life and why everything is absolutely chaotic.

Some things aren’t changing.

We’re just getting started.

I have a ridiculous number of ideas for Spines & Stars, and we’re only at the beginning.

Things will be added, changed, experimented with, and occasionally broken while I figure out what the hell I’m doing.

That’s kind of the point.

I don’t want Spines & Stars to feel like some giant, faceless book platform. I want it to feel like a corner of the internet built by someone who genuinely loves books for other people who genuinely love books.

Whether you’re reading a literary masterpiece, a 700-page fantasy that requires a map and family tree, the most unhinged horror novel you’ve ever encountered, or absolute five-star filthy garbage that you would never explain to your mother, there’s probably room for you here.
